Envusa Solar Project Supports Mining Sector Shift Toward Clean Electricity in South Africa

South Africa’s mining industry is accelerating its transition toward cleaner electricity supply following the commissioning of the 240 MW Mooi Plaats solar facility by Envusa Energy.

The project will supply renewable electricity to major mining operators including De Beers, Kumba Iron Ore, and Valterra Platinum, supporting efforts across the sector to reduce Scope 2 emissions linked to purchased electricity.

Mining remains one of the largest electricity-consuming sectors in South Africa, making industrial clean-power procurement central to the country’s broader decarbonisation strategy.

Projects like Mooi Plaats also represent a structural shift in how large industrial users manage electricity supply. By sourcing renewable power directly from independent producers, mining companies are reducing exposure to grid instability and lowering reliance on Eskom.

The transition is increasingly important for export competitiveness as global commodity buyers introduce stricter carbon-intensity requirements across mineral supply chains.

Renewable procurement at this scale positions South Africa’s mining sector to remain competitive in emerging low-carbon metals markets while strengthening long-term energy resilience.
