The upcoming Ninth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in September 2024 is poised to play a pivotal role in addressing the pressing energy access crisis in Africa.
With over 600 million Africans lacking reliable electricity, the continent faces significant challenges in achieving sustainable development.
FOCAC 2024 will place a strong emphasis on renewable energy, reflecting China’s commitment to deliver over 27 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity to Africa.
This significant investment will facilitate the continent’s transition to sustainable energy sources, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
Beyond the quantitative target of 27 GW, FOCAC 2024 is expected to focus on the quality and impact of renewable energy projects. This includes promoting the development of off-grid and decentralized renewable energy solutions to reach remote and underserved communities.
Additionally, the forum will likely address the challenges of integrating renewable energy into existing power grids and ensuring grid stability.
The forum will also focus on the implementation of previous commitments made at FOCAC 8. The China-Africa Climate Action Tracker has recorded 122 projects related to the commitments made during the previous forum, indicating a positive trend towards delivering tangible outcomes.
However, there is a need to accelerate the pace of implementation and ensure that these projects are delivering the intended benefits to African communities.
The energy crisis in Africa has far-reaching implications for healthcare, education, and overall quality of life. By providing development solutions, China-Africa cooperation can contribute to economic growth and improved living standards.
