Grid Africa and the Clean Energy Generation Network (CEGN) have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing solar energy deployment through advanced battery storage solutions. This collaboration is poised to address the country’s persistent energy challenges, particularly in rural and underserved regions.
Addressing Zambia’s Energy Deficit
Zambia has been grappling with energy shortages, primarily due to its heavy reliance on hydroelectric power, which accounts for approximately 79% of its electricity generation. Recent droughts have exacerbated the situation, leading to a 500 MW deficit in electricity supply as of early 2024. This shortfall has resulted in prolonged load shedding, adversely affecting businesses and households across the nation.
Grid Africa’s Expansion into Zambia
Recognizing the urgent need for diversified energy solutions, Grid Africa has expanded its operations into Zambia. With a proven track record in deploying over 55 MW of hybrid energy projects across Africa, including in Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Ivory Coast, Grid Africa brings a wealth of experience in integrating solar, battery storage, and generator systems to provide reliable power solutions.
The Role of CEGN in Renewable Energy
The Clean Energy Generation Network (CEGN) is a key player in promoting sustainable energy solutions across the continent.

By collaborating with Grid Africa, CEGN aims to leverage its expertise in clean energy technologies to support the deployment of battery storage systems that complement solar installations, ensuring consistent power supply even during periods of low solar irradiance.
Strategic Objectives of the Partnership
The primary goal of the Grid Africa-CEGN partnership is to enhance the reliability and accessibility of solar energy in Zambia through the integration of battery storage systems. This initiative targets several key objectives:
- Mitigating Load Shedding: By storing excess solar energy during peak production times, the battery systems can supply power during outages, reducing the impact of load shedding on communities and businesses.
- Supporting Rural Electrification: The partnership focuses on deploying off-grid solar solutions in remote areas, aligning with Zambia’s goal of achieving universal access to electricity by 2030.
- Promoting Economic Development: Reliable energy access is crucial for economic activities. The initiative aims to empower local enterprises, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions by providing them with consistent power supply.
Complementing Existing Renewable Energy Initiatives
This partnership complements ongoing renewable energy projects in Zambia. For instance, ENGIE Energy Access, through its unit MySol Grid Zambia, is constructing 60 solar mini-grids expected to provide electricity to over 40,000 people in rural areas. Similarly, the Itimpi Solar Power Station, commissioned in April 2024, adds 60 MW to the national grid, helping to alleviate the country’s energy deficit.
Economic and Social Impact
The Grid Africa-CEGN initiative is anticipated to have a profound economic and social impact:
- Job Creation: The deployment of solar and battery systems is expected to create numerous jobs in construction, maintenance, and operations, contributing to local employment.
- Improved Quality of Life: Access to reliable electricity enhances the quality of life by enabling better healthcare services, education, and communication.
- Environmental Benefits: By reducing reliance on fossil fuels and hydropower, the initiative contributes to environmental sustainability and resilience against climate change.
Future Prospects
The partnership between Grid Africa and CEGN signifies a strategic step towards a more sustainable and resilient energy future for Zambia. By integrating advanced battery storage with solar energy, the initiative not only addresses immediate energy shortages but also lays the groundwork for long-term energy security and economic development.
As Zambia continues to pursue its renewable energy targets, collaborations like this will be instrumental in achieving nationwide electrification and fostering sustainable growth.
