Dongfeng’s Box Set to Become South Africa’s Most Affordable Electric Vehicle in 2025

Posted on December 16, 2024December 16, 2024 By Africa Digest News No Comments on Dongfeng’s Box Set to Become South Africa’s Most Affordable Electric Vehicle in 2025
Dongfeng, one of China’s oldest and most established automakers, is set to enter the South African automotive market with the launch of the Dongfeng Box, a compact electric vehicle (EV) designed to appeal to budget-conscious consumers.
Scheduled for release in early 2025, the Box is gaining attention as a potential contender for the title of South Africa’s most affordable EV.
The launch comes as demand for electric vehicles grows, driven by rising environmental awareness and government incentives promoting greener transportation options.
Founded in 1969, Dongfeng has a long history in the automotive industry, initially focusing on commercial vehicles before expanding into passenger cars.
Over the years, the company has built a global presence through joint ventures with brands like Peugeot, Citroën, and Honda.
This experience equips Dongfeng to navigate the competitive South African automotive market, which has seen increasing interest from Chinese automakers.
The Dongfeng Box is tailored for urban driving, featuring a single front-mounted electric motor that delivers 70 kW and 160 Nm of torque.
With a top speed of 140 km/h, it boasts an impressive range of 430 km on a single charge, based on China’s CLTC measuring system.

The Box supports DC fast charging, allowing its battery to charge from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes. A quick eight-minute charge provides about 200 km of range, ensuring convenience for city dwellers.
Inside, the Box offers a modern, minimalist cabin with a 12.8-inch infotainment screen that centralizes most functions, creating a clutter-free experience.
Additional features include wireless charging, heated and ventilated seats, and advanced safety technologies like Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Auto Park Assist. These features cater to tech-savvy consumers who value both comfort and safety.
Although pricing is yet to be confirmed as the Box undergoes homologation for the South African market, estimates suggest it could retail between R460,000 and R510,000.
This price range places it competitively alongside models like the GWM Ora and BYD Dolphin, making it an attractive choice for consumers seeking affordable electric mobility.
Dongfeng’s entry into South Africa is more than just the launch of a single vehicle—it signals a broader strategy to establish itself in the country’s growing EV market.
Along with the Box, Dongfeng plans to introduce additional models in 2025, including the 007, an electric range-extended vehicle (EREV).
The 007 features an internal combustion engine used solely as a generator for its electric motor, further diversifying Dongfeng’s offerings.
The arrival of Dongfeng highlights the increasing competition among automakers in South Africa’s EV sector.
As more Chinese brands enter the market with affordable options, traditional manufacturers may need to reassess their strategies and pricing. This shift could lead to more innovation and greater consumer choice.
Dongfeng’s introduction of the Box represents a key development in South Africa’s automotive landscape.
By focusing on affordability and practicality, this compact EV has the potential to attract a wide range of consumers while contributing to the country’s transition to sustainable transportation.
As electric mobility gains momentum worldwide, Dongfeng’s strategic entry may accelerate EV adoption in South Africa’s diverse market.
