Global South Utilities Drives Solar Power Expansion in Chad and Somaliland

Abu Dhabi-based Global South Utilities (GSU) is making significant strides in expanding renewable energy capacity across African frontier markets, with notable advancements in Chad and Somaliland. These projects underscore GSU’s commitment to replacing traditional diesel-based power generation with sustainable photovoltaic (PV) solutions, contributing to energy security and environmental sustainability in regions often underserved by modern infrastructure.

In Somaliland, GSU achieved a key milestone in February 2026 with the commissioning of a 5 MWp grid-connected solar PV plant in Berbera. This project is a cornerstone of the “Green Berbera Vision,” an initiative aimed at transitioning the port city towards cleaner energy sources. The success of this initial phase has paved the way for further development, with plans already in motion to expand the solar capacity in Somaliland to 12 MW, demonstrating GSU’s long-term commitment to the region.

Chad has also seen substantial investment from GSU. In February 2026, a 5 MWp solar PV plant, integrated with a 5 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a 5 MVA diesel generator, was commissioned in remote Eastern Chad.

This hybrid system is designed to provide reliable power to approximately 27,400 households, significantly improving access to electricity in an area where it was previously limited. Furthermore, GSU commissioned Chad’s first utility-scale solar plant, a 50 MW facility in N’Djamena, in October 2025, marking a pivotal moment for the country’s energy landscape.

GSU’s strategy focuses on developing robust and scalable renewable energy solutions that address the unique challenges of African frontier markets. By integrating solar PV with battery storage and, where necessary, diesel backup, GSU ensures a stable and consistent power supply, crucial for both residential and industrial consumers.

This approach not only reduces carbon emissions but also offers a more cost-effective and reliable alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based generation.

The impact of these projects extends beyond environmental benefits. By providing access to reliable and affordable electricity, GSU is facilitating economic development, supporting local businesses, and improving the quality of life for thousands of people.

These initiatives are vital for fostering sustainable growth and reducing energy poverty in some of Africa’s most vulnerable communities. GSU’s continued expansion in these markets highlights a growing trend of private sector investment in renewable energy across the continent, driving a transformative shift towards a greener and more electrified future.
