In January 6, 2025, Rwanda achieved a major milestone in e-mobility with the launch of the Gorilla 2.0, an advanced electric motorcycle set to transform transportation in the country.
Equipped with state-of-the-art B3 battery technology, the Gorilla 2.0 features a sleek design and can travel over 90 kilometers on a single charge.
The launch coincides with Rwanda’s plan to phase out internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles in Kigali by January 2025, paving the way for a greener future.
Officials from the Ministry of Environment highlighted the role of electric motorcycles in advancing Rwanda’s sustainable transport goals.
To encourage adoption, the government partnered with JALI Finance to offer taxi-moto operators access to the Gorilla 2.0 without requiring an upfront deposit.
With approximately 46,000 moto-taxis in Rwanda—26,000 of them in Kigali—the demand for electric alternatives is significant.
The Gorilla 2.0 offers a cost-effective and reliable solution, enabling operators to reduce expenses and increase earnings.
One driver noted that installment-based financing makes it easier to transition to electric motorcycles.
ForS.U.L E-Mobility Company, this launch signals a turning point. Plans are underway to expand dealership networks, build a high-capacity assembly line in the Kigali Special Economic Zone, and enhance the customer experience with a new showroom on Airport Road.
The company is also collaborating with banks to provide loans for retrofitting petrol or diesel motorcycles into electric models.
The initiative offers an affordable option for operators unable to purchase new electric bikes, while cutting air pollution and fuel costs.
The Gorilla 2.0 symbolizes more than just innovation in transportation; it reflects Rwanda’s commitment to sustainability.
With government support and growing consumer interest, Rwanda is positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s e-mobility sector.
By replacing ICE motorcycles with electric alternatives, Rwanda is reducing emissions, boosting economic opportunities, and setting an example for other nations striving for sustainable transportation solutions.
